Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®)
What is TRE?
Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) is a body-based approach that uses a short sequence of simple exercises to gently activate the body’s natural tremor response. These tremors are a normal biological mechanism that help release accumulated stress and tension. The process works directly through the body and does not require detailed discussion of traumatic experiences.
Over time, this natural tremoring can support a gradual reduction in physical and emotional strain.
When TRE® May Help
TRE may be helpful if you are experiencing:
• Ongoing stress or burnout
• Anxiety accompanied by physical tension
• The after-effects of shock or overwhelming experiences
• Difficulty sleeping or relaxing
• A body that feels persistently tight, braced or on edge
What a Session Is Like
Sessions begin with a short sequence of simple exercises that gradually invite the body’s natural tremor response.
The process is guided and carefully paced. You remain aware and in control throughout, and tremoring can be slowed, paused or stopped at any time.
Some sessions include reflection and integration; others focus primarily on the body-based process.
Possible Benefits
People often report:
• A deeper sense of physical relaxation
• Reduced background stress or anxiety
• Improved sleep
• A noticeable decrease in muscular tension
• Greater capacity to recover after stressful events
FAQ
Do I have to talk about the trauma?
No. TRE works primarily through the body and does not require detailed discussion of traumatic experiences.
Are the tremors safe?
Yes. Tremoring is a natural muscular reflex. It is introduced gradually and carefully, and you remain aware and in control throughout the process.
Are the tremors the same as seizures or epilepsy?
No. The tremors in TRE are a natural stress-release response of the muscles. They are not caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain, as occurs in epilepsy. Awareness is maintained at all times, and the tremors respond to grounding, posture and pacing.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies. Some people notice changes relatively quickly, while others prefer a more gradual process with ongoing practice and integration.
Is TRE suitable for everyone?
TRE is generally gentle and self-regulated. People recovering from recent surgery, significant injury, or certain medical conditions may wish to consult with their healthcare provider before participating.
